Aberdare National Park
Location
Aberdare mountain ranges are located in the central highlands of Kenya. The park is located 100km north of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. The ranges stretch over various terrain at elevations from 2000m to 4000m above sea level. The Aberdare National Park was gazzetted in 1950 and covers an area of 767 square kilometres. The ranges straddle five counties, i.e. Nyandarua, Nyeri, Murang’a, Laikipia and Kiambu.

Geography and Ecosystem
Aberdare National Park is known for its high altitude and is home to diverse wildlife species. It is a crucial water catchment area and a source of waterfalls, numerous streams, and several rivers, including the great river Tulasha, which drains its water in Lake Naivasha. The park’s terrain is diverse, featuring mountain peaks, deep valleys, and steep slopes.
The Aberdare Mountains are an isolated volcanic range on the eastern side of the Great Rift Valley. It is home to various vegetation zones like bamboo forests, moorlands, and rainforests, which are found at lower elevations. A diverse range of wildlife residing in the park includes Lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes, the endangered black rhino and over two hundred and fifty bird species.

Enjoy a game drive around the park in a 4 by 4 vehicle to spot a variety of animals. Guided safari walks and horse riding are also activities done for close interactions with animals like giraffes.

Bird watching at the Aberdares is a fun opportunity since you will be able to view the endangered Aberdare Cisticola, Sparry Hawk, Jackson’s Francolin and other birds.

The Best Time to Visit
The Central Region is one of the wettest areas, experiencing high levels of rainfall throughout the year, thus becoming muddy, making it difficult to go for hikes due to the sloppiness of the mountains. The preferred time to visit the area is when it is dry.
