Geography and Ecosystem
Samburu is characterized by semi-arid plains, rocky outcrops, river valleys and mountain ranges. Ewaso Nyiro is the main water source in the park. The climate is semi-arid to arid. Rainfall is experienced in two seasons: March- May and October – November which is relatively low and erratic. The temperature is generally hot and dry having some days exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.
The vegetation in Samburu National Park id dominated by drought-resistant species like acacia trees, Commiphora shrubs and grasses. Riparian forests grow along rivers, especially along the Ewaso Nyiro. Samburu National Park is home to a notable number of animal species like African elephant, Predators like lion, leopard and cheetah, Giraffs, Grevy’s zebra and over 400 species of birds.
